Happy Coming Out Day!

Unforunately, this year, I did not have time to make any cards to send out for Coming Out Day. And, although I had been looking for the perfect stationery for the last three months, I was left unsatisfied. So, without time and without stationery, I am appending my collection of quotes that would have been on the cards, had I made them.

And the day came when the risk it took to remain closed in a bud became more painful then the risk it took to blossom.
Anaïs Nin

We must overcome the notion that we must be regular... it robs you of the chance to be extraordinary and leads you to the mediocre.
Uta Hagen

Heterosexuality is not normal - it's just common.
Dorothy Parker.

My only regret about being gay is that I repressed it for so long. I surrendered my youth to the people I feared when I could have been out there loving someone. Don't make that mistake yourself. Life's too damn short.
Armistead Maupin

The Bible contains 6 admonitions to homosexuals and 362 admonitions to heterosexuals. That doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals. It's just that they need more supervision. Lynn Lavner

To being an "us" for once instead of a "them:" La vie bohème!

DEAR MISS MANNERS: What should I say when I am introduced to a homosexual "couple"? GENTLE READER: "How do you do?" "How do you do?"
Miss Manners (Judith Martin), Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior

Dear Abby: [We're upset because a gay couple has just moved in across the street.] How can we improve the quality of the neighbourhood? -You could move.
Abigail Van Buren

Personally, I think there are much better things to worry about than [gay] marriage. Not that it isn't a worthy cause, to be sure... but I always felt like there were better fights to be had. Let me not worry about getting slammed up against a locker and threatened with rape in high school. Then we can talk flower arrangements.
Kristen Foery

[quoting her friends from high school, Alan and Jeremy] "I do not need nobody tellin' me who I am! I know who I am!... I be walkin' down the hallway, they call me names. They call me faggot, they call me sissy, I say, 'Oh yeah? Well, you forgot, I'm also a model and a actress, so fuck you too!'"
Margaret Cho, The Notorious C.H.O.

In high school, while your children were doing what kids that ages should be doing, mine labored over a suicide note, drafting and redrafting it to be sure his family knew how much he loved them. My sobbing 17-year-old tore the heart out of me as he choked out that he just couldn't bear to continue living any longer, that he didn't want to be gay and that he couldn't face a life without dignity. You have the audacity to talk about protecting families and children from the homosexual menace, while you yourselves tear apart families and drive children to despair. I don't know why my son is gay, but I do know that God didn't put him, and millions like him, on this Earth to give you someone to abuse.
Sharon Underwood

Wherever it has been established that it is shameful to be involved with sexual relationships with men, that is due to evil on the part of the rulers, and to cowardice on the part of the governed.
Plato

As everyone knows, a fag is a homosexual gentleman who has just left the room.
Truman Capote

I remember when I realized I was gay. It was a bitter January day in 1992 and I was walking through Rehoboth, minding my own business. All of the sudden I was approached by a woman in flannel and Birkenstocks. I was strangely repulsed and attracted by her. As she walked towards me, she removed a small packet from her cargo pants. She caught my gaze. "Sweet child, do you know what a lesbian is?" "Um..." "Would you like to be one?" "Er..." "First I must sprinkle you with fairy dust," she said before throwing powder onto my head. The next day in science class, I couldn't help but notice that Sharon, the blond girl sitting next to me, was so... attractive... Kristen Foery

If you're going to be gay, you might as well be fabulous. It's a birthright.
Frank deCaro

Mom, I've been sitting around all day trying to decide whether to tell you it's just a phase, or to tell you the truth.
Eric, in Edge of Seventeen

We do not recruit. We can only impress.
Marga Gomez

What is straight? A line can be straight, or a street, but the human heart, oh, no, it's curved like a road through mountains.
Tennessee Williams, A Streetcar Named Desire
